Style:
I tend to consider myself a good all-around player. I have the distance if I need it but I pride myself on keeping it in the fairways. I have a shot for most situations and rarely find myself with a lie I can’t make a good run down the fairway with. For me its all about the approach game, saving par if I have a bad drive or being able to put myself within the putting circle is my key for scoring low on longer, tougher courses.
Favorite Courses:
My home course is George Ward park in Birmingham, Al, but other favorites include LeMaster (Trussville, Al.), UAH and Mastin Lake (Huntsville, Al), Bowers (Tuscaloosa, Al.), and Sioux Passage and Jefferson Barack (St. Louis)
In The Bag:
Diablo – more open courses, minimal wind, long distance throws (anything over 400 ft.)
Illusion – I have two or three really understable ones in the S plastic that I use for long turnovers and rollers if need be.
Blurr – I carry three of these, one is fairly beat in and I use as my primary driver. The other two are more stable and I use for long hyzer shots.
RageThis is my primary sidearm disc ( I use a one finger pop sidearm that manages to turn the rage). It makes for great “s” shots and skip shots.
SabreThis is my bread and butter disc. At my home course I probably throw it the most off the tee. A great fairway driver it holds any line I put it on (once it gets just a little beat in)
Demon – I have two different demons, a white one with a 2003 stamp on it that is very beat in and a great straight flyer, and a red one with the demon stamp that is, next to the spirit, the most overstable thing in my bag. Great for up shots and head wind putts.
Spirit – This is my “specialty” disc. If I need any spike hyzers or quick skip shots (backhand or sidearm) I’ll use this disc.
Wizard - I use the hard wizard for long putts or slight headwinds and the medium/soft wizard for everything else.
Strengths:
My strength is my ability to zone out any distractions. Having played competitive sports all my life including four years of division one soccer at UAB I’ve found it very easy to focus on the shot at hand and rarely will something distract me.
Training:
I play as often as I can at my home course, which helps me hone in my accuracy game. I tend to not keep score as I play (which holds true in competitive matches as well) to insure that I’m focusing only on the shot at hand. I putt for at least fifteen minutes before each round I play. I’ll even take my basket out at night and go to a dimly lit park to practice putting. Not being able to fully see the basket but knowing where it is helps me with muscle memory and consistancy with putting.
Player Advice :
Be consistent. It doesn’t matter what your form is, how far you throw, how many aces you have, or how many big putts you hit if you’re not shooting around the same low scores everytime. Don’t worry about whateveryone else is doing, golf is one of the few great sports we have where its just you playing the course. If you shoot your game, you’ll get the wins.
Player Models/Influences:
Tom Monroe taught me the game so I have to give him some of the credit. I model my game after two great champions, Dean Tannock and Tiger Woods. Physically I try to use the same fluidity and consistancy as Dean, letting the disc do what it does and not trying to make it do what I want it to do. Mentally I try and play like Tiger. I’m a competitor to the the last putt, focused and intent believing I can win everytime I step on the tee.
Personal Disc Golf Goals:
Like most golfers I would love to win the Worlds and the USDGC. But I’d also like to just compete in both of those events as well as the Memorial and the Players Cup. I hope to become a great competitor in the game and help spread the popularity of our sport to the masses.
