Strengths:
Although most would say "Drive for show, putt for dough," I would argue that my strong suit makes those "putts for dough" a lot easier. Since I started playing, my driving ability has provided opportunities for birdies on many holes where those at my skill level couldn't imagine hitting a birdie. Growing through the disc golf ranks, my driving ability has enabled me to find alternative routes to holes and created more birdie opportunities. Also, I can throw slower discs which allow for a greater margin of error because I don't need a driver to reach 375 foot holes. My "Drive for show" mentality helped me to a strong finish at some big tournaments. Lastly, casual players will often approach me about increasing their distance, and it adds instant credibility to Gateway when say that I throw Gateway discs. Suffice to say, having a big arm is the cornerstone of my game.
Training:
In order to train, I stick to the basics. My practice routine consists of the following:
- Practicing putting for 15-20 minutes before each round.
- Implementing field training to improve driving distance and accuracy with mid-range discs.
- Playing a diversity of courses to practice a variety of shots.
- Including additional "disc golf" exercises in my weight-training programs.
Player Advice:
Although the adage "Practice makes perfect" may be overused, it is absolutely true. This can be achieved through the following:
- Practice "must have" putts before every round.
- Increase driving distance and mid-range accuracy by practicing in open fields with plenty of room.
- Play a variety of courses to round out your game.
- Hone your mental game by playing tournaments as frequently as possible.
- Throw GATEWAY!
